Progress of development of the software framework behind evolution@home

Several rounds of the design-implementation cycle have lead to an overall design roadmap that governs current development of EEPSLION.

  1. Implementation of the largely automated analysis software keeping track of the number of repeated computations for each parameter combination. The corresponding modules will allow to regularly compose a run-file collection for the web that contains only the most up to date files even after many participants have send in results. Currently this is done in a very rough way manually.

  2. Implementation of a better high score generating module based on a database.

  3. Redesign of the simulator user interface: Yes, it will eventually get a graphical user interface and automated get-new-run-files and email-results functions. Yes, we know you would rather have this today than tomorrow, but more than the foundation has to be laid before a roof can be added.

Obviously, the transition to a fully automated mode of operation for evolution@home requires that the complexities of step 1 and 3 are mastered somehow. Currently we are working on a prototyptic implementation of a fully-automated scheduling system that should allow you to forget about run-file composition and results-submission. Unfortunately it is very difficult to give a reasonably accurate roadmap for starting (or even completing) this transition, but we hope that we will be able to come back with more details on that some time this year.

At this stage it makes little sense to list the features of the new software that we work upon and those that are planned for the future, as the one big feature that we work upon now is the transition to fully automated global computing. The set of features planned for the future is to give you maximal flexibility, ease of use and freedom in your choice of commitment.

While working on these goals the scientific investigation of the current simulators model is being advanced too. The last months have been very successful in terms of scientific analysis. Currently the corresponding papers are being written up and peer-reviewed, a process that usually takes its time. You will be informed about all new papers with evolution@home results that appear somewhere.
